What MULTIBANCO is.

MULTIBANCO is Portugal’s domestic banking and payments network, operated by SIBS. For online merchants, the main payment experience is the MULTIBANCO Payment Reference.

At checkout, an Entity, Reference and Amount are generated for the order. The customer uses this information to complete payment through supported home-banking or MULTIBANCO channels.

The unique reference connects the completed payment with the merchant order and gives Portuguese customers the flexibility to pay through a familiar domestic banking environment.

The MULTIBANCO payment experiences
MULTIBANCO Payment Reference

The order creates an Entity, Reference and Amount for the customer.

The reference is tied to the order, so the completed payment matches back automatically.

Home-banking payment

The customer enters the payment information in a supported Portuguese online or mobile bank.

Payment happens inside the customer’s own banking environment, on their schedule.

MULTIBANCO channel payment

The same reference can be paid through a supported MULTIBANCO ATM or digital channel.

One reference, several familiar Portuguese channels — the customer picks the one they prefer.
