What iDEAL is.
iDEAL is the established Dutch online bank-payment method. It lets a customer pay directly from their bank account without entering card details or manually typing an IBAN, amount or payment reference. The payment instruction is prepared for the customer and the customer approves it inside the trusted environment of their own bank.
For a merchant, iDEAL combines the familiarity of online banking with checkout-level automation. Once the bank confirms a successful payment, the merchant receives immediate payment confirmation and can normally fulfil the order without waiting for a traditional bank transfer to arrive.
The customer selects iDEAL at checkout, continues in their bank’s app or online banking, reviews the pre-filled payment and authorises it.
The merchant receives the result immediately — order fulfilment does not wait for a transfer to arrive.
Where supported, the consumer can share saved payment, contact and delivery information from their banking environment.
Shorter checkout while the customer stays in control of the data they share.
A successful iDEAL payment carries an online payment guarantee to the payee — stronger payment certainty than many pull-based methods.
iDEAL is a completed bank transfer, not a card authorisation that can later be charged back.
The customer journey.
Six steps from checkout to guaranteed confirmation — all inside the customer’s own bank.
- 01
Select iDEAL
The customer selects iDEAL at checkout or opens an iDEAL payment request.
- 02
Payment prepared
The payment is created with the merchant, amount and transaction reference already populated.
- 03
Into the bank
The customer continues to their supported banking app or online banking environment and reviews the payment.
- 04
Authenticate and authorise
The customer authorises the transfer using the bank’s normal security method — app approval, biometrics or another bank-specific flow.
- 05
Result returned
The bank and iDEAL payment chain return a successful, failed, cancelled or pending result to the payment provider/acquirer.
- 06
Immediate confirmation
On a successful result, the merchant receives immediate online payment confirmation and can complete the order or unlock the service.
Payment confirmation, refunds and the Wero transition.
A successful iDEAL transaction is not equivalent to a card authorisation that can later be charged back through card-scheme rules. iDEAL is a bank transfer with a payment guarantee to the payee once it has completed successfully — stronger payment certainty than many pull-based payment methods.
Refunds are still possible, but they are normally initiated by the merchant through the payment provider/acquirer rather than by reversing the original bank transfer at checkout. The operational refund timing and whether partial refunds are supported depend on the payment provider.
The Netherlands is currently moving from iDEAL to Wero in phases. During 2026 consumers may encounter iDEAL | Wero co-branding, while the backend migration proceeds gradually. iDEAL is planned to be phased out by the end of 2027. Merchants should keep branding assets, acceptance marks and integration requirements aligned with current provider instructions.
